The phenomenon of neuroplasticity, or the ability of the brain to create new neural pathways, is another important component of transformation. Through mindfulness practice, which involves cultivating an awareness of our present-moment experience without judgment, we can learn to exercise regulation over our thinking process and subsequent emotions. Mindfulness practice is an important piece of our treatment program.
A primary objective of our treatment program is the cultivation of real meaning and purpose in the lives of our clients. In successful transformation, along with finding purpose, the motivation for living has become positive rather than negative. Most people in this society will find that their motivation for doing what they do in life is negative; they are motivated by fear of loss of some kind. When real transformation occurs for people, the motivation for life becomes to continue on the path that they are on; they are motivated by a love of life as it now unfolds. The client finds that with real purpose and love in their life, they have greatly decreased their desire to use alcohol or other drugs.
